Tim is completing his PHD at the University of Oxford
Project Title -- “On The Road To Net-Zero -- Mapping the Systems Transformation of Energy Markets in Low/Middle Income Countries”. (Ongoing).
Supervisor – Professor Paulo Savaget
Affiliations – Oxford Net Zero, Department of Engineering Entrepreneurship
Ongoing Research Abstract:
The world is failing to put the systems in place to transition to net-zero carbon emissions at the needed pace.
While most countries have signed the Paris agreement to reach net-zero by 2050, 55% of all emissions are projected to reach net-zero after this target date, and 75% of “committed by 2050” countries have not specified exactly how they plan to meet net-zero targets. Oxford Net-Zero reports that only 5% of committed countries are “on track” to reach net-zero by 2050. Low and middle income countries are most at risk of falling behind due to limited resources, underdeveloped energy markets, and lack of infrastructure.
Time is scarce, and stakes are high. Low/middle income countries must have an understanding of how to create equitable systems change as they work towards net-zero, something helping them set concrete targets, track their progress, and ensure equitable outcomes for key energy stakeholders.
This PHD proposes to contribute answers to two core questions. “How can different institutional structures effectively support climate compatible development strategies?” and “What systems and market mechanisms would ensure a faster transition to a sustainable, carbon-free global economy?”.
